Head Lice Are Growing Resistant to Over-the-Counter Chemical Treatments

Head Lice Are Growing Resistant to Over-the-Counter Chemical Treatments

Over the years, head lice have developed a resistance to chemical treatments, from over the counter options to expensive prescriptions. We have seen the media cycle through warnings about how either the improper use of chemicals to treat head lice, or the need to repeat applications of chemicals has led to the mutation of “Super Lice.” Super Lice Found in 25 States Hard to kill super lice Head Lice Getting Drug-Resistant Super-Lice Found in 25 States A large number of lice populations have gene mutations that may make it resistant to over-the-counter treatments Hard to kill super lice are resistant to many chemicals The bugs known as super lice have developed genetic mutations that make them resistant to many of the over-the-counter and prescription chemicals that used to kill them. Head Lice, Getting Drug-Resistant, Shut Down Idaho School Over-the-counter products like Nix and RID have been effective, but now many cases are becoming drug resistant, so head lice outbreaks like the one in Idaho are on the rise. We see that resistance to chemicals is nothing new across the spectrum of pesticides, from pyrethroids to permethrin and ivermectin. However, in nature, we continue to see pests, insects and parasites avoid certain plants and plant families over millennia of written and oral tradition. The long-term effects of chemical use has proven inconclusive regarding the risks to people, but we can now say with certainty that the long-term effects on pests are proving, well, harmless and ineffective at preventing their spread. We encourage a holistic life style and promote well-being through natural alternatives, but we are seeing a marked value in...
Reminder to be Mindful: Aromatherapy vs Anxiety, ADD and More

Reminder to be Mindful: Aromatherapy vs Anxiety, ADD and More

In the Age of Technology, we have gained a profound ability to multitask. However, it comes at the cost of focus, and an exponential increase in anxiety across our social spectrum. We have forgotten how to be mindful in favor of being hyper-connected. Mindfulness is an abstract notion of being that we take for granted. Seeming too difficult to grasp or too much of a demand on our already over-taxed attentions (and intentions), we forget that practicing mindfulness is as simple as it gets. To focus on a single act, to immerse fully in the immediate, present moment and nothing else is mindfulness. Mindfulness of exquisite flavors immerses us in our partaking of delicious meals (and reminds us to chew more slowly – an important part of nutrition, people). Mindfulness of a deep tissue massage sends us into a time warp of sensate bliss. Mindfulness keeps our noisy minds quiet and our wandering minds still. Our essential oil blend was originally developed as a study aid. My daughter was in law school preparing for the bar exam and begged for something that would help her stay awake. Every student around her was taking some pill or other, pounding energy drinks or just crippling their adrenal system with chemical agents and ultimately, toxins. Mindfulness combines the invigorating, focusing properties of Bergamot and Lemon with the creative awakening and centering properties of Jatamansi, Holy and Sweet Basil with the circulatory stimulating properties of Rosemary and Jatamansi for a simple and naturally effective aid to help indulge Mindfulness. And my daughter passed the bar on her first try, by the way!  ...
Mindfulness on 60 Minutes

Mindfulness on 60 Minutes

We are overloaded day in and day out with the conveniences of mobile technology. What is supposed to save us time ultimately saps our strength. 60 Minutes recent segment on the practice of Mindfulness revealed how out of touch we are with the act of living. We will look at how we can alleviate some of the imbalances through Mindfulness, both as a practice and as a healing essential oil.   Why? We are a goal-oriented society with overactive brains, constantly wandering from place to place, and imagining ‘what ifs’ at every turn. We are rarely mindful of being in the moment. Let’s be honest, even while you are reading this you are probably thinking about your calendar, who still needs a Christmas card, what’s on the grocery list, or the next goal in the near future instead of what resides within us and around us in this present moment. These demands we place on ourselves to multitask and the drive to stay constantly connected through technology cause us to access several, often disparate regions of the brain at once. Anxiety, fatigue and depression are all activated responses from the posterior cingulet region of the brain. When these emotions occur, the activity in this region of the brain increases. When we spend so much time ‘plugged in’ to stay connected or using technology as the governing intermediary of our lives, we are literally feeding the beast. Anxiety, depression and fatigue are undiagnosed side effects of overtaxing our adrenal glands, and overstimulation of the cerebral cortex. Taking time to observe our present state of body-mind, just letting go of everything...

Stress Less for the Holidays

Stress Less for the Holidays

Few things in life are certain: death, taxes and stress. Just the mention of the word stress makes people tense up. Fortunately, we have a multitude of emerging practices that help us cope with visible and invisible stresses, leading to better health and well-being. Stress Less is a blend of essential oils that can help ease the burdens on the body and prevents stress from breaking down the body’s immune barrier(s). The constancy of stresses on the body come from many sources: emotional, physical, and mental. We create some of this stress by how we react to circumstances in our daily lives, or over long periods of time. Some stresses are borne from trauma long past, to mildly annoying stimuli, such as a constant buzzing, getting stuck in traffic, or overtaxing the body. Stress can cause imperceptible cracks in our well-being that range from emotional responses like irritability, mild incoherence and difficulty concentrating or remembering. Stress can also manifest as catalysts to very physical trauma such as headaches, chronic pain, sickness, even disease. Integrative medicine is supporting a variety of stress reduction methodologies as preventative measure to improve healthier living. With chronic stress, those same nerve chemicals that are life-saving in short bursts can suppress functions that aren’t needed for immediate survival. Your immunity is lowered and your digestive, excretory, and reproductive systems stop working normally. Once the threat has passed, other body systems act to restore normal functioning. Problems occur if the stress response goes on too long, such as when the source of stress is constant, or if the response continues after the danger has subsided. One...
Keep Your Immune System in Balance

Keep Your Immune System in Balance

Touch of Earth’s Immunity blend combines specific essential oils to target the body’s immune response. Using only the purest essences, the compounds in our essential oil blend can level out an overtaxed immune system by balancing several different responses, boosting hormonal responses and alleviating outside attacks. With the seasons beginning to change, and our lives shifting to the indoors, we will be in closer contact with friends, neighbors, co-workers and yes, germs. The most prevalent germs (and arguably the most reviled) are the common cold and influenza (the flu). What’s worse, these germs are getting more and more resistant to inoculations. So, the best defense is prevention. The Immune System Defined The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. The cells involved are white blood cells, or leukocytes, which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances. Our bodies are constantly bombarded with outside agents, bacteria, viruses, and many more pathogens every day, every hour, every minute, in our homes, at work, and even walking through the park. Our immune responses are designed to attack foreign bodies that prevail upon our cells growth, function and transport. But, as so often happens, our bodies are overtaxed with the stresses of our lives, fatigued and poorly nourished (coffee is not a meal, people). The effects on our bodies can be itemized by how our system responds. In other words, what hormonal signals send messages throughout the body or to the brain to release a specific neurotransmitter, and then (depending on whatever toxins are present)...
Just Breathe: Respiratory Grande – the First Defense

Just Breathe: Respiratory Grande – the First Defense

Breathing comes naturally and is the essence of life. Respiration is the transport of oxygen from the outside air to the cells within tissues, and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. Each of our cells respires metabolically, where nutrients are converted into useful energy. Touch of Earth’s Respiratory Grande blend is designed to maximize the breath of life throughout the body, enriching oxygen flow to all the vital organs, muscles and more. Poor air quality, pollen, dust, allergens and even fragrances can impact the upper respiratory system negatively. That’s why we’ve created a blend of essential oils to boost the active transport of oxygen into the bloodstream. The body breathes in through the nose and mouth, where all oxygen and external bodies may be introduced. From there, a series of the body’s defenses attempt to prevent the entry of foreign bodies into the pulmonary system, such as cilia, mucous membranes and mast cells. After being breathed in, air is transported through the esophagus to the lungs, where tiny bronchioles open and close (dilate and constrict) to allow free passage of air. Within each bronchiole are several thousand blood vessels or capillaries that control the diameter of the bronchiole’s opening. When the bronchioles don’t get enough oxygen, when they get inflamed or even fatigued, their ability to perform regularly and reliably is impacted. Ineffective or inefficient oxygen transport can lead to a series of breakdowns in the body that can make one sick. Leveraging the vasodilating properties of eucalyptus, the antiseptic and circulatory properties of palmarosa, cinnamon, lavender and frankincense, and the overall combination of stress-reducing benefits from each essence, Respiratory Grande provides a...
Bugz Be Gone, Dengue fever, chikungunya – Oh, My!

Bugz Be Gone, Dengue fever, chikungunya – Oh, My!

I’ve recently had a few Bugz Be Gone orders and it was a reminder that many folks, especially from colder parts of the country travel to Florida and other warm places in the winter. There are insect borne diseases that have made their way to the U.S. and neighboring islands in the past few years. Dengue fever has been in the U.S. for some time but there are also cases of chikungunya (sounds like chicken gun ya) showing up here. These bites can be more serious then the usual mosquito bite. Just a friendly reminder that Bugz Be Gone has been around the world and always the same feed back,’this stuff really works’. Available in an 8 oz. spray bottle, a 4 oz. lotion and a 10 ml...
Save Daylight and Stress Less

Save Daylight and Stress Less

Here we are in early November. Daylight savings time shifted us back an hour this past weekend. The days grow shorter, temperatures cooler and we come into the darker cycle of our solar year. A good way to keep ourselves warm, healthy and our mind and spirits uplifted is to diffuse essential oils. Uplifted spirits also help strengthen the body. The evergreen oils are a good choice since they tend to be calming to the nervous system. A great blend for this purpose and time of year is Stress Less. It contains the beautiful tree oils of cedar, pine and spruce. Besides a great diffusing blend I personally use it almost daily to help balance my endocrine system. You know, the poor overloaded system which helps us keep our stress in balance. This is important since too much stress can lower our immune system. It’s on sale this month with my other great immune blends, Respiratory and Immunity. Check it out at...
When diet is wrong…

When diet is wrong…

A friend shared this proverb today. “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” Ayurvedic Proverb. How true this is. I’m a huge fan of Hippocrates. You know the guy who said …’let food be your medicine and medicine your food..’? Did you also know he cured many of a major plague in Athens back around 400 B.C.? The best way to good health is still a good diet, enough sleep in a dark room, some quiet time each day to breathe and let go, be it a walk, a yoga class or whatever that looks like to you. The cold and flu season is off to an early start again. There are many good preventive herbal supplements that support prevention. Since our throat is one of the first lines of defense, I love a good herbal throat spray. And of course don’t forget essential oils. These really are some of the most potent natural medicines of the 21st century. I recommend Touch of Earths Immunity, Stress Less and Respiratory for these times. If you’re feeling anxious and need something calming Inner Peace is your blend. To purchase go to...
